The Script process

We were given an hour to plan and write the first two pages of our coming of age script. I wrote 2 scripts and decide which to put forward.

TOM

REUBEN

My scripts were not chosen and I was put in a group to do Dasiy's script exploring female friendship, loneliness, and identity. We first read through the script as a group giving notes, discussing production capabilities and locations.  Dasiy then wrote the next 4 pages of the script which we then broke down with the method presented in this video.

Research on my job role

I mostly took the role as camera operator filming the phone box scene, corridor scenes and bus stop.  For the completions I took inspiration from ladybird and book smart as they both had similar themes within the coming of age genre. In booksmart cinematographer Jason McCormick often uses a deep depth of filed to emerge the audience in the world and the charecotrs, he also utilise two shots to show the closeness of the two girls - using overhead shots for moments of confremtation. He also uses a orange and blue ocular palate for insides and outsides reseticvitly. Lady birds cimeraphotgrher Sam Levy also uses a lot of wide two shots, highlighting Ladybirds isolation in a town she's longs to leave.

I also researched the time period of the piece the late 90s.  Reasserting the social norms and parenting stereotypes which compliment the narrative for example the baby boomer "helicopter parent" theory.  I also looked at the technology of the time in the hope to refer from showing any, not of the time.

Planning

We began by discussing locations, actors, and planning documents in a group discussion. I made a list of which we noted who was making each document, what props and kits were needed, and what cast and crew.

Evaluation

I will be evaluating the short coming of age film written and directed by Daisy Bennet where I predominantly played the role of camera operator and producer. In the context section of the unit, we watched Mark Kermode's secrets of cinema where he outlines the 7 essentials of the genre, first time, and setting.

How did you establish a clear setting and time within your coming-of-age film? Give consideration to your mise en scene such as decor, costume, props, etc. as well as sound e.g. soundtracks. Did any other films influence your decision-making?

To establish the time period of the 90s we used a plethora of different techniques to varying levels of success. Most notable is the soundtrack - in the edit I used songs from the time period, for example “come as you are '' by Nirvana. Music acts as a screenshot for a time period, as people will often associate a year or decade with the music they listened to or was popular. ANother way we established the setting was with the way props interacted with the story, for example the beginning and end scenes take place in a phone box which in modern day would be replaced for a mobile phone. The charationzation could also be argued as a method to establish the time, the mother is raising a child in the 80s/90s suggesting she herself is a Baby boomer, a generation known for helicopter parenting, something the mother partakes in within the film. One element i think we could have improved on was the use of costume to establish time period - we researched fashion of the 90s finding denim and large trench coats which we used in production, but with a larger budget and time investment we could have improved this front, with band t-shirts from the time and enforced fashion style for extras. Another element which we fell short with was the decor- for example in the classroom scene there is a macbook and an interactive white bourd in the background- the inclusion of this modern techknowledgey acts to undermine the 90s setting, with a higher budget to recreate 90s decor would improve this element.

How successful were you in constructing an identifiable goal for your character(s) ? What did you do to achieve this? Did any other films influence your decision-making?

The protagonist of our piece, Robin. had an unidentifiable goal - unclear of her purpose in life, instead drifting between the goals others push her into, Skylar into the art competition and her mother to stay home. This theme of wondering, unclear of your purpose, in a search for identity and ambition was inspired by the 2018 film Ladybird and the 2014 film Boyhood. These films explore growing up and moving away from comfortability, much like our own film. Often cinematic choices we made were influenced by these films for example to represent the unclear motivation of Robin we see her travelling in various contradictory directions - this shot is often used in COming of age films like LadyBird. However the combination of Robin's lack of goals and her imperfect, fall driven characterization present a problem to the narrative. Both of these aspects could work with a longer narrative, not in the structure of a short film but in the minal time it's hard to root for Robin as she rejects those close to her and regularly changes motivation - from staying home at the start to desirability wanted to leave by the end with little reasoning for the shift. TO improve the discomtect felt between the protagonist and audience I would utilise more internet camera angles such as close-ups to capture Robin's emotions. For example, in the scene where Robin sees the leaflet Skylar was looking at, I would turn back to Robin to see her reaction.

What personal growth did your character undertake and how did you achieve this within the narrative and in the edit? Did any other films influence your decision-making?

We used a cyclical narrative structure- starting showing just half of the phone box scene  Robin lost in the world, thinks she has no one then to the ending scene where she takes on the advice of her mentors, taking responsibility for her future by calling the art competition. THis acts as the progression of the character - growing up and maturing. Robin not calling Skylar also acts as a representation of her movement into not relying on/controlling Sky, this shift comes when the mother repeats the words “there's me” to Robin, a sentence Robin says in the scene before. This theme of “becoming your mother” or who you wore to destroy is common in the coming of age genre. For example, Ladybird, Ladybird and Marion are often likened.

What Coming of Age codes and conventions did you employ in your short film? Below is a reminder of the 9 areas we explored in the Mark Kermode context assignment. Give clear examples from your film. Did any other films influence your decision-making?

Who am I?

Robin is on a search throughout the piece to discover her identity through determination or passion. Skylar acts opposite to Robin and she is entirely sure of her ambition.

The Soundtracks of Our Lives

THe soundtrack ws reflective of the time period and the scenes in the piece. For example the song used at the start and end were about running away from home in the 90s.

Time and Place

The time and place of the piece is the 90s which is reflected in the music and props.

Grown-Ups

Robin's mother in the piece acted as a restriction for the narrative - a binary opposite to skylar and robins dreams, unrested by practicality, shown in the 2nd scene where Skyler suggests they go to paris.

Loss of Innocence

The looming fact of the film is that Robin will eventually have to “grow up”, at first rejecting by staying home and by the end accepting it with the entering of the art competition.

Keeping it Real

Daisy wrote the script and also performed in the piece as Robin which worked as she could portray the character to her wish.

 The Gang

The gang was less prominent in our narrative as Robin is isolated and thereby reliant on SKylar.

Thinking back to your context and research work, what films influenced you the most for this film? If your script wasn't chosen for this project, think back to your own script instead. Where in your script specifically can we see the influences?

My script wasn't chosen but in my proposed script I was inspired by various coming of age films which especially looked at mentors and the development of character vior another. FPr example moonlight - with the role of Blue and Kevin in the upbringing of Chiron. I also was inspired by other narratives with friendships in the centre of the narrative such as Ladybird and booksmart.

Think back to when you first started year 12, consider your skill development from your point of entry. Create a skill audit of the three production stages: pre production, production and post production. Give examples of all three areas where you feel you have made progress and set yourself clear and realistic goals for making improvements in the areas you are not so strong at yet e.g. pre production- scriptwriting, I was successful when I …. However , I still need to work on…..to do this I will…… I will do this by……

Since y12 i have developed my skills in the different production stages.

Pre-production

I have gotten more efficient with planning documents and completed work resources that I find useful in production, for example diagrams of scenes. However I need to develop my skills in script writing so that I can write in shorter amounts of time and fit the given brief.  To improve also I would like to out tighter my planning and production knowledge to make a better film.

Production

I have improved my understanding of cimpathoury and making a coriant scene with corresponding shots e.g. OTS, OTS wide for a conversation. I would like to increase my knowledge of camera settings on the YG30s. to put this into action I have signed up to Beths masterclass in camera settings specifically to learn aperture and shutter speed settings.

Post-production

I have improved my editing skills when combining sound and video. However, I wish to increase my understanding of colour theory and colour grading.  I would also like to improve my sound mixing which I believe Wik come with practise due to the improvements I've seen in the past 2 years.n
