Section 1: Rationale
I came to the course with a level two BTEC in film and media production which gave me a basic understanding of pre-production, production, and post-production. Through this course, I have refined and gathered experience in these areas in greater detail. First, with the storytelling unit where we built upon scriptwriting skills by making various scripts off prompts. This helped me refine this discipline and then further through the various units such as the coming of age and auteur projects, this skills-building has pushed me to take a scriptwriting role in production, though I do not think it is the sector I feel most confident in and will therefore ask for criticism and assistance.
The next element of skills development we were taught was production, brooding our understanding of shot types and shooting styles this gave me knowledge of cimerpahtogry band shooting which was then put into practice and accentuated in the production of projects most evidently in the Auteur project in which we were tasked to replicate the style of auteur and I took a DOP role, studying Barry Jenkins style to transfer onto our own film. At the start of the course, I didn't know how to use a Sony V630 and had a limited understanding of the DSLR cameras, now I have an understanding of both cameras and their respective settings, and corresponding themes they can be used to portray. This discipline of filming has influenced my project in which I plan to take a director of a photographer role primarily.
Through the projects, this year I have increased my knowledge in preparation for shooting and general pre-production such as creating call sheets and location recess. This has improved my structuring and organisation. A large improvement from my structuring at the start of the year, this discipline has influenced my decision to take upon a producer role in the production and will help when I transfer my knowledge into completing forms such as the Gantt chart.
Visual effects were another skill I increased my understanding of thought disciplines such as procreate. At the beginning of the school year, I knew nothing of animation or special effects in film. But by creating my own short ident animation on procreate I increased my understanding in this area. As I enjoyed the freedom of this process I wish to experiment further in this discipline in the CMP project, parahes adding elements in the title sequence.
Finally, this course has made me refine my skills in post-production through the use of premiere pro. The last project we made, the music video unit, highlights this skill development as I incorporated elements of all previous projects, using color grading, matching actions, and sound mixing.
Section 2: Project Concept
The concept of my piece is a short film following a boy named Elijah who runs away from home. The main theme the film will explore will be friendships and lost friendships as we cut between Elijah and his old friend Lucas in the past and his life now. Ending with them meeting and saying goodbye on a bus. This film will be paced like a slice of life film, taking its time with shots and the loneliness of Eljiah with Lucas.
First I will conduct primary research in the form of questionnaires. I will then circulate these thought emails to a range of people not subject to the selected target audience. From these responses I will learn the target audience and from here narrow down and adapt my concept and aims to appeal to them. It will also cement my ideas for imagery which will hopefully assist in the storyboard and general planning process. Secondary research will also assist this process by seeing how people have previously made films of the same style.
The resources I plan to use for this project will be subject to crew and availability of the kit so I will likely have adaptable plans in production. Ideally, the resources I will use will include, the Sony V630 with a 50mil lens to collect close-up shots I have previously collected in other shoots, most notably in the auteur project which had a similar style of slice of life. I also will need a tripod to maintain static shots that can be animated onto more effectively. An Ipad and pen in post-production perhaps add elements of animation. Lights to ensure the camera need not rely on ISO and therefore appear grainy. And finally, a computer to edit on premiere pro.
The form my production will be completed in is a short film around 3 to 5 minutes long. The presentation will be dependable to the audience as it will be disputed on online platforms. It will fall into the drama short film genre. The allocated time scale is 8 weeks ending the week of May 17th though I have my AS history assessment on the day after the deadline and will probably have to adapt filming times around revision.
Section 3: Evaluation
Throughout the process of creating this project I will keep a production diary to document how far i've got, this will be in the form of voice notes, written and types notes and videos. This will then assist in the final reflection as I will see the collective mistakes and success which created the product, which i can transfer into further projects as learning, and experience.
Section 4: Project action plan and timetable
I intend to organize my planning process with the Gantt chart which I will use to assign a timetable for work and shooting times. Hopefully, this will provide structure for not only me but the cast and crew. I will add additional notes with comments of the Gantt chart such as notes.
