Vertical Cinema

We were given the task to recreate a trailer for a famous film. Within my group we began researching various possible films landing on Fight Club. From this we began scanning the trailer for shots to reinvision these shots we put onto the google slides below which we then used in the location recee and production.

We then split the scenes we wanted to film by location so we could refetivly film all the shots.

Plane

Soap scene

First meet scene

Office

First office - boss

Second - cigarette

outside / night

ear punch

Montage clips

Penguin

Fighting b-roll

Therapy room

Montage things

Helena smoke

Window

Last frames - night/city

Bathroom

Intimidating scene

Man - masking tape

House

Sofa scene - whip pan from tv

We filmed all the scenes with time to spare, which we spent doing addictional shots for a montage. All shots were addedd to the server then we began editing.

Reflection

I was put in a group with Tasha, Cormac, and Luca, we decided to recreate a trailer for Fight Club. To approach this we re-watched the film, scanning for signature clips distinctive and recognizable to the film. Next, we began creating a storyboard with screenshots from the film so we could replicate the color pallet, composition, and set design. Throughout the process, we removed, tweaked, and added shots to fit practicality, time requirements, and limitations with requiring props Eg: we were unable to acquire a gun so abandoned plans for a shot of Luca with a gun in his mouth. We also adapted plans after surveying the filming locations available in the school, deciding that some shots relied too heavily on the set design that we were unable to produce on the budget. My role in the project was to oversee the planning and production process and then to edit my personal cut. We took a collaborative approach to the organization so together we also acted as producers, directors, and directors of photography. We worked relativity effectively as a group completing the production with time to space which we spent getting extra clips for the montage sequence. However, there is always room for improvement hence there were some shots such as the “door being closed shot” that could have been filmed more time efficiently allowing more important shots, such as the wide ending shot, to be most composed and established. We experimented with different creative techniques adding to the original shots with different transitions such as whip pans and crossfades. For example to the “welcome to fight club” shot we added a movement at the start of the shot, establishing the set and making up for what we lack in facilities for filming.  In the editing process, I also tried to engage in various techniques to replicate the original - most notable of which was the color grading process which really enhanced the creation of atmosphere - especially in the office setting in which I took down the contrast and highlights - illustrating the mundane boredom of the character. I think the most successful thing about our final outcome was the editing which brought together the random assortment of clips to create an organized sequence alongside music to draw the audience's attention. To improve the production I would have planned the editing sequence further before production, thereby improving the sinking of the filmed dialogue with the film’s script the lack of this sinking is most notable;e in the bathroom scene. From this experience I will learn to pre-plan before production, creating a shot list from which I could edit. In feedback people seemed to like the color grading style, likening it to the original fight club movie. Audiences also reported a dislike of the choppy nature of the edit, from this I will learn to take audio clips from an original source and not a secondary source with additional music, then add external music myself. In essence, I learned not to intervene in the regular flow of music.
